BOGOTA, Colombia (AA) - Brazil’s foreign minister called Wednesday for peaceful solutions to the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Palestine.
Mauro Vieira, speaking at the G-20 Foreign Ministers Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, said this should be a priority.
Vieira said Brazil was “deeply worried” by the proliferation of conflicts around the world, asking how challenges such as poverty, inequality and environmental preservation can be tackled without ensuring conditions of peace and cooperation.
Saying Brazil is ready to do its part to reduce international tensions, Vieira noted that the G-20 plays an important role in this regard.
He said multilateral organizations are not adequately prepared to address current challenges, however, and that the UN Security Council has been ineffective in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Vieira also pointed out that global military spending has reached record levels while aid to poor countries and the amount allocated to address climate change are significantly low.
