ANKARA (AA) - The 2021-22 English Premier League newcomers Brentford on Friday beat favorites Arsenal 2-0 in the season's opening match.
Home team Brentford took the lead in the 22nd minute as Sergi Canos' shot in the box beat Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
Brentford's Christian Norgaard clinched the 2-0 win in the 73rd minute as the Danish midfielder scored with a header after a long throw in. The Arsenal defense failed to parry it as the ball bounced in the six-yard box and Norgaard arrived at the scene to score.
This made a perfect start to the 2021-22 season for Brentford in front of their fans as the Premier League said 16,479 spectators watched the match.
Brentford appeared at the top flight of English football for the first time since 1947.
Arsenal stars Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette were absent in the match due to illness.
