BERLIN (AA) - German authorities on Tuesday said they arrested two brothers on suspicion of planning a terror attack in the country.
The main suspect, a 28-year-old Syrian citizen, was arrested in the northern city of Hamburg, the police and prosecutors said in a joint statement.
He purchased raw materials recently on internet for the production of explosive material, according to the statement.
His 24-year-old brother, who is believed to have planned the attack, was arrested in the southern German city of Kempten.
The two suspects are religious extremists and were planning a terror attack targeting civilians, the prosecutors said. It was not immediately clear whether they had picked a specific target.
The police searched this morning several properties, including the homes of the suspects in Hamburg and Kempten. Around 250 police officers took part in the operation
