ATHENS (AA) — Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is considering a Cabinet reshuffle after his New Democracy (ND) party witnessed declining support in last week's European Parliament elections, local media reported on Monday.
Discussions on the matter between Mitsotakis and close associates have been ongoing since late Sunday as preliminary results showed that the party lost the backing of about a million voters compared to last summer's national general elections, according to public broadcaster ERT.
It noted that many voters have not been dissatisfied with the government's handling of major problems in the country, including inflation.
In response, Mitsotakis may announce reshuffle his government, a move that may be announced later this week, the channel suggested.
The premier also intends to accelerate reform efforts in sectors that directly impact daily life in the country, it added.
While campaigning, Mitsotakis had stressed repeatedly that his party aimed to win at least 33% of votes in the European elections, which lasted four days across the EU but began and ended on Sunday in Greece.
While his ruling liberal-conservative ND party came first in the elections with 28.31%, this was a major fall from its over 40% in last year's general elections.
