ISTANBUL (AA) - California Republican leaders on Thursday suggested revoking or reducing state funding for university administrations failing to stem the ongoing wave of pro-Gaza protests in US universities.
Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones and Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher suggested the budget action to ensure "campus safety and prevent unlawful activities."
Jones suggested: "Violence and illegal activity of any kind is not protected by the First Amendment," urging administrations to regain control of the situation and secure a "safe learning environment."
The First Amendment in the US Constitution protects the freedom of speech and freedom of assembly.
Additionally, the leaders proposed cutting state-funded grants for students found "guilty and suspended for their involvement in these illegal acts."
Gallagher criticized school administrations for inaction stating: "All Californians have a right to express their views, but that right ends when you carry out acts of violence."
Jones and Gallagher condemned protests across California and urged proactive measures from administrators to prevent further escalation.
The demonstrations began on April 17 at Columbia University to protest Israel's offensive in Gaza, where more than 34,500 Palestinians have been killed and 77,700 injured since an Oct. 7 attack by Hamas.
The protests have served as a flashpoint for the wider movement to protest Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza.
