Cambodia put its weight behind China concerning the Taiwan issue and said Saturday that Phnom Penh opposes any form of "Taiwan independence,” according to a statement.

Cambodia reaffirms its adherence to the one-China principle, said a joint communique following Chinese President Xi Jinping meeting Friday with visiting Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet in Beijing, state-run Global Times reported.

"It opposes any attempt to use the Taiwan question to interfere in China's internal affairs and contain China. Cambodia also opposes any form of ‘Taiwan independence’ and firmly supports all efforts made by the Chinese government to achieve national reunification, and Cambodia will never develop any form of official relations with the island of Taiwan," it said.

The two sides agreed to maintain high-level exchanges between their militaries, deepen practical cooperation in educational training, joint exercises, medical services and mine clearance, and strengthen multilateral coordination and cooperation, it said.

Hun Manet arrived Thursday in Beijing for a three-day visit to mark the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two nations.
