Canada's wholesale sales fall 0.6% in June

Figure, leading indicator of consumer spending, up 1% annually; Ontario leads sales decline with 1.1%

ISTANBUL (AA) - Wholesale sales in Canada fell 0.6% in June, compared to the previous month, to $82.4 billion, according to the statistics office on Thursday.

Wholesale sales, a leading indicator of consumer spending, was in line with expectations.

The figure for May was revised to show a decrease of 1.2% from a decline of 0.8%.

"Sales declined in five of the seven subsectors, with the largest decline coming from the motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts and accessories subsector," Statistics Canada said in a statement.

For a second consecutive month, sales in the motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts and accessories sub-sector drove the decline in wholesale trade by falling -2.6% to $14.2 billion, it added.

The province of Ontario led the way in sales decline, with a decrease of 1.1%, according to the agency.

Wholesale sales were 1% lower in June, compared to the same month last year.
