China on Friday appointed former navy commander Dong Jun as the country’s new defense minister, state-run media reported.

"Dong Jun has been appointed as the new defense minister by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress," according to Global Times.

Until recently, Dong served as the People’s Liberation Navy commander.

His appointment as defense minister came after China removed Li Shangfu from the post in October.
