ANKARA (AA) – China has launched a new remote sensing satellite into space, state-run media said on Saturday.

A Long March-5 Y6 carrier rocket blasted off from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in the southern Hainan province late Friday, Global Times reported.

The new satellite will be used in land surveys, environmental management, meteorological warning, forecasting, and comprehensive disaster prevention and reduction, according to the report.

It was the 502nd flight mission of the Long March rocket series.

On Dec. 6, China launched a satellite into space from the South China Sea to test internet technologies, marking the first-ever space launch mission in the contested waterway.
