ANKARA (AA) – Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Macau on Wednesday for a three-day visit to celebrate Beijing's 25-year rule over the former Portuguese colony.
Xi on Friday will attend a gathering commemorating the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland, and the inauguration ceremony of the Macao Special Administrative Region’s (SAR) sixth-term government, Xinhua News reported.
He will also inspect the Macau Special Administrative Region.
In October, Sam Hou Fai was elected as Macau’s new chief executive, securing an overwhelming majority.
This is Xi's third visit to the region; his previous visit was in 2019.
Macau, located on China's south coast, is the only region where gambling is legal, and the casino industry is its source of revenue.
Macau was leased to Portugal in 1557, officially became a Portuguese colony in 1887, and was returned to China on Dec. 20, 1999.
