Climate activists glue themselves to roads in Berlin, Munich

Last Generation group vows to continue radical protests unless government takes strong measures against global warming

BERLIN (AA) – Climate activists glued themselves to the roads in several German cities on Tuesday, demanding greater action from the government against global warming.

In Berlin, members of the Last Generation group blocked road entrance to A100 highway, causing a massive traffic jam during the morning rush hour.

“We don’t do this lightly. We are sorry for the disturbance to the people. We know of no other effective means to save us all,” the group said on Twitter.

In the southeastern city of Munich, Last Generation activists glued themselves to a major street near the central train station and blocked traffic at rush hour.

In a statement posted on Twitter, the activists said they will continue their climate protests unless the government takes concrete measures to address the climate change.

“Business as usual would kill us. We are the last generation that can still change this course!” the protesters said.

The Last Generation group sparked controversy in German public opinion with their extreme actions and radical protests in recent months.

Members of the group glued their hands to famous paintings in museums and blocked highways and even runways at airports to attract media attention to the global warming.

The climate activists are heavily criticizing the German government for not taking serious measures to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit), but further investing in fossil fuel infrastructure, endangering the future of humankind.

Their immediate demands include a 100 km/h (62.14 mph) speed limit on German highways, and the introduction of €9 ($9.5) public transport ticket, which would allow unlimited travel and can be used around the country.
