LONDON (AA) - Climate activist group Extinction Rebellion on Saturday launched a new wave of protests, targeting the royal residences at Windsor Castle and the nearby home of the prince and princess of Wales.
The demonstration, which saw protesters lining the streets of Windsor, included the symbolic delivery of a pink postbox to King Charles III.
In a social media update posted shortly before noon, Extinction Rebellion shared images of their protest, captioned: "Delivering the post in Windsor." The group is calling for drastic action on climate change, emphasizing the need for a citizens' assembly to address the crisis.
Protesters held banners with slogans such as, "Upgrade democracy," "This is a call for revolution—the Earth is under threat," and "Revolution is a strong word and I use it deliberately."
The demonstrators marched down The Long Walk, the iconic two-mile avenue leading up to Windsor Castle, as part of their "Upgrade Democracy" event.
The group hopes that the protest will draw attention to their demands for immediate climate action and the end of fossil fuel dependency.
The protest has prompted a significant response from security forces, with reports indicating that "hundreds" of police officers have been deployed to protect the royal residences over the next three days.
These include Windsor Castle, where King Charles and Queen Camilla reside, the prince and princess of Wales' Adelaide Cottage, and Prince Andrew's Royal Lodge.
The reason there is such a large police presence is that the activist group said they would try and storm the castle. There will be extra resources allocated to prevent that from happening.
Despite the heightened security, Extinction Rebellion clarified that their protest is not directed at any individual member of the royal family but at the broader "system" that they believe needs urgent reform.
In a statement on their website, the group acknowledged King Charles's understanding of the environmental crisis, noting that he "clearly understands" the severity of the situation and "the urgent need for society to change course."
The group’s latest actions underscore their ongoing campaign for stronger climate policies and more democratic engagement in decision-making processes.
As they continue to push for a citizens' assembly, their activities in Windsor are likely to keep the climate crisis in the spotlight over the coming days.
