ANKARA (AA) – Coronavirus cases in Nigeria have risen to 36,107 with 653 new infections, according to official statistics.

Six new deaths were recorded in the West African nation, bringing the total to 778, according to figures late Saturday from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

More than 14,900 people have recovered from the virus in Nigeria.

The hardest-hit states are the commercial capital Lagos with 13,341 infections, the capital Abuja with 2,957 infections, and Oyo with 2,107 infections.

A nation of 200 million people – Africa’s most populous – Nigeria is struggling to tackle the outbreak due to its poor healthcare care system.

Since first appearing in China last December, the novel coronavirus has spread to at least 188 countries and regions. The US, Brazil, India and Russia are currently the countries hardest hit in the world.

The pandemic has killed over 602,000 people worldwide, with almost 14.3 million confirmed cases, according to figures compiled by US’ Johns Hopkins University. Over 8 million people have recovered from the disease.
