ANKARA (AA) - Colombian cyclist Egan Bernal is in intensive care following a training accident on Monday.
The two-time Grand Tour winner was taken to intensive care after surgery on his spine following a collision with a bus during a training session.
According to a statement from the Clinica Universidad de La Sabana, which is treating Bernal, the operation “kept intact the neurological integrity and conserved the functionality of the segments involved.”
He is expected to be kept in intensive care for another 72 hours to monitor his progress.
Bernal, 25, the winner of the 2021 Giro d'Italia, is also the first Latin American cyclist to win the Tour de France (2019).
