Dengue claims 8 more lives in Bangladesh, taking death toll over 1,600 this year

With 920 more infections, total cases in South Asian country rise to 309,087

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AA) – With eight more deaths on Monday, the fatalities due to mosquito-borne viral dengue fever rose to 1,606 in Bangladesh this year since January, according to the health authorities.

Bangladesh this year witnessed a record-breaking dengue infection since the country started keeping records in 2000.

Of the new deaths, four were reported from the capital Dhaka, the epicenter of the deadly disease. Of the total fatalities this year, 930 were from Dhaka, according to the data provided by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The directorate also registered 920 new cases of hospitalization, taking the total number to 309,087 this year. Of the total cases, 107,298 were from Dhaka.

As many as 3,493 patients are currently under treatment in hospitals across the country, including 1,011 in Dhaka, as of Monday, read the DGHS daily dengue update.

The viral infection is transmitted to humans through infected mosquitoes but there is no treatment for the infection.

Last year, Bangladesh reported 281 deaths and 123,808 cases.
