DHAKA, Bangladesh (AA) – Bangladesh on Sunday reported eight new fatalities from the viral dengue fever infection, pushing the total death count to 415 amid a rising number of hospitalizations.

Of the total deaths, seven were from the capital Dhaka, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.

The south Asian nation also recorded eight deaths on Saturday.

The directorate also reported 1,389 cases of hospitalizations with the mosquito-borne disease, bringing the total cases since this January to almost 80,000. Of that number, 4,035 patients were still receiving treatment in various hospitals as of Sunday.

Professor Kabirul Bashar, an entomologist at Jahangirnagar University, told Anadolu earlier this month that the country could face a worsening situation in October and November due to heavy rain in September and a lack of proper measures to fight the disease.

In 2023, Bangladesh reported a record 1,705 deaths due to dengue and a total of 321,179 dengue cases, according to official data.
