Disruptions expected during week as train drivers go on strike in UK

ASLEF union demands significant pay rise for train drivers who have not had an increase since 2019 while the cost of living, in that time, has soared

LONDON (AA) - Rail transportation was expected to be severely affected in the UK on Tuesday as train drivers went on a series of strike action and an overtime ban over pay and working conditions.

The strike was called by the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen from Tuesday to Thursday impacting different rail operators, including Greater Anglia.

Most operators do not operate any trains on their strike days, affecting some services to Wales and Scotland.

Also, the overtime will reduce schedules during the week, disrupting some operators.

C2c, Greater Anglia, Great Northern, Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern/Gatwick Express and South Western Railway are among the rail operators that have been affected by the action during the day.

The strike action will hit Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway, Heathrow Express, London Northwestern Railway and West Midlands Railway on Wednesday and LNER, Northern and TransPennine Express on Thursday.

National Rail warned passengers of significant disruption, advised them to plan ahead and to check before travelling.

This becomes the latest of walkouts announced by the union due to a long-running dispute over pay and working conditions.

Earlier, Mick Whelan, general secretary of the union, said they are demanding a significant pay rise for train drivers who have not had an increase since 2019 while the cost of living, in that time, has soared.
