Dow falls at opening; S&P, Nasdaq flat after 8-day streak

Gold adds 0.87% to $2,526 per ounce; silver up 1.1% to $29.74

ISTANBUL (AA) - The Dow Jones declined at Tuesday's opening, while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq were flat after eight consecutive days of a winning streak.

The blue chip Dow lost 46 points, or 0.11%, to 40,850 at 9.40 a.m. EDT (1340GMT).

The S&P 500 was up just two points, or 0.04%, to close at 5,610 but the tech-heavy Nasdaq was down only six points, or 0.02%, to 17,870.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, rose 1.6% to 14.89. The 10-year US Treasury yield lost 0.7% to 3.844%.

The US dollar index fell 0.2% to 101.69, while the euro added 0.14% to $1.1101 against the greenback.

Precious metals were on the rise, with gold adding 0.87% to $2,526 per ounce and silver increasing 1.1% to $29.74.

Oil prices were up more than 0.5%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $78.13 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $74.08.
