Dow posts worst session since September as US stocks close lower

VIX volatility index jumps 6%; gold loses 1.2% to $2,715 per ounce; Dow, S&P see 3rd consecutive losing session

ISTANBUL (AA) - The blue-chip Dow saw its worst daily losses since early September as US stocks closed Wednesday on a lower note.

The Dow Jones industrial average dove almost 410 points, or 0.96%, to end the day just below 42,515. The S&P 500 was down almost 54 points, or 0.92% to 5,797. Both indexes posted their third consecutive losing session.

The Nasdaq Composite, meanwhile, plummeted 296 points, or 1.6%, to 18,276.

The VIX volatility index, referred to as the "fear index," jumped 6% to 19.30. The 10-year US Treasury yield rose 0.9% to 4.246%.

The US dollar index added 0.3% to 104.39, while the euro lost 0.13% against the dollar, trading at $1.0783.

Precious metals were in negative territory, with gold losing 1.2% to $2,715 per ounce and silver trimming 3.5% to $33.64 an ounce.

Oil prices lost around 1%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $75.20 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $71.01 per barrel.
