The captain of German Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, Emre Can, replaced a sick Aleksandar Pavlovic on Germany's EURO 2024 squad, the German Football Association said Wednesday.

"We wanted another defensive midfielder in our squad and have therefore decided to call up Emre Can," said head coach Julian Nagelsmann. "He made it clear that he was excited and ready to join the squad right away. We wanted another player in the squad with experience and one that knows how to deal with pressure. He fits that profile nicely."

Pavlovic helped Bayern Munich win the 2022 - 23 Bundesliga title.

Can, on the other hand, has played for several important clubs including Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool and Juventus.

He helped Bayern Munich clinch the 2012 - 13 Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League titles, and won two Italian Serie A titles with Juventus.

The 30-year-old also bagged the 2017 Confederations Cup with Germany.
