Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey wins gold in women's 10,000m at World Athletics Championships

Gidey crosses finish line in 30:09.94

ISTANBUL (AA) - Letesenbet Gidey of Ethiopia clinched gold in the women's 10,000 meter race Saturday at the World Athletics Championships.

"After in Doha 2019, world record-holder Letesenbet Gidey finally claims world 10,000m!," World Athletics wrote on Twitter. "She defeats Hellen Obiri and Margaret Chelimo Kipkemboi in a world-leading time of 30:09.94," it added.

Obiri and Kipkemboi, both from Kenya, came in second and third in the competition in Eugene, Oregon.

Gidey, 24, won the silver medal at the 2019 World Athletics Championships and bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Pawel Fajdek claimed his fifth straight world gold medal by throwing the mallet 81.98 meters in the men's category.

Runner-up Wojciech Nowicki threw a distance of 81.03 and Eivind Henriksen finished third with a toss of 80.87.
