ISTANBUL (AA) - A military helicopter belonging to the Ethiopian Air Force crashed Saturday in Bahir Dar, according to media reports.

It is not clear if the helicopter was carrying military officials and or government representatives, Borkena News reported.

The crash occurred around midday at the Belay Zeleke International Airport in Bahir Dar, the capital of the Amhara region.

An airport worker told Meseret Media that the crash took place, but no further details have been provided.

There is no information available on any casualties or the cause of the crash.

All flights to and from Bahir Dar, including those operated by Ethiopian Airlines, have been suspended, according to passengers and sources.

The government has not issued a statement on the crash.

Reports indicate that defense chief Field Marshal Berhanu Jula visited Bahir Dar on Friday for a meeting with regional defense officials. State media shared a picture of him receiving a traditional honor vestment, known as Kaba.

Ethio News quoted Asres Mare Damte, head of the political division of the Fano forces in Gojjam, who said, “A miracle occurs before the vestment even leaves Berhanu Jula’s shoulder.” The meaning of that statement remains unclear.

Sources reported that two military helicopters had been flying in the area frequently in the last two days.
