ANKARA (AA) - A moment of silence will be held in this week's games to honor the victims of the earthquakes in Türkiye, Turkish Airlines EuroLeague said Tuesday.
"A moment of silence will be held in this week's EuroCup and EuroLeague games to honor the victims of the earthquakes in Turkiye and its neighboring countries," the basketball league wrote on Twitter. "We would like to offer once again our condolences and wish strength to everyone affected by this natural disaster."
EuroLeague previously announced that it has decided to suspend several basketball games in Türkiye due to powerful earthquakes there that left thousands dead and injured and caused massive destruction.
Over 5,400 people were killed and more than 31,000 others injured in 10 provinces of Türkiye after two strong earthquakes jolted the southern part of the country on Monday. Over 8,000 have been rescued.
A 7.7 magnitude tremor struck the Pazarcik district of Kahramanmaras province. Then about nine hours later, a 7.6 magnitude quake centered in Kahramanmaras’s Elbistan district rocked the region, affecting several other provinces, including Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye and Sanliurfa.
The earthquake was also felt in several countries in the region, including Lebanon and Syria.
