ISTANBUL (AA) - European stocks started 2024 on a mixed note Tuesday after mostly posting double-digit gains in 2023.
The STOXX Europe 600, which includes around 90% of the market capitalization of the European markets in 17 countries, was down 0.51 points, or 0.11%, to finish at 478.51. The index posted a gain of 12.6% in 2023.
The UK’s FTSE 100 lost 11 points, or 0.15%, to close the first trading day of the new year at 7,721 after it increased 3.6% last year.
France’s CAC 40 fell 12 points, or 0.16%, to 7,530. The index posted a 16.4% increase during 2023.
Germany’s DAX 30, on the other hand, added 17 points, or 0.11%, to finish the day at 16,769. It was the best performing index last year with a gain of almost 20%.
Italy’s FTSE MIB rose 173 points, or 0.57%, to end the first trading day of 2024 at 30,525.
Spain’s IBEX 35 added 80 points, or 0.79%, to 10,182 at the closing bell.
