The STOXX Europe 600, which includes around 90% of the market capitalization of the European market in 17 countries, fell 8.61 points, or 1.83%, to close at 460.96.

London's FTSE 100 lost 129 points, or 1.69%, to end the day at 7,531. Germany's DAX 30 declined 311 points, or 2.02%, to finish at 15,113.

France's CAC 40 decreased almost 160 points, or 2.27%, to end the day at 6,852 points.

Italy's FTSE MIB plummeted 550 points, or 2.04%, to end at 26,415 points.

Spain's IBEX 35 was the worst performer of the day, falling 224 points, or 2.55%, to finish at 8,573.

After the US officials' statements on Friday regarding the crisis between Russia and Ukraine, the diplomatic steps taken over the weekend were not enough to boost investor confidence.
