ISTANBUL (AA) - McLaren's Lando Norris was handed a five-place grid penalty in the Istanbul Grand Prix for ignoring yellow flags during qualifying session one, Formula 1 announced on Saturday.
"Norris set his best time of Q1 on a lap when there were waved double yellow flags for the Williams of Nicholas Latifi, which was beached in the gravel," Formula 1 said on its website.
"As a result, he was given a five-place penalty, dropping him to 16th, and three penalty points on his licence, taking his tally to five for a 12-month period," it added.
In addition to Norris, his teammate Carlos Sainz was toppled with a three-place grid penalty in the Turkish GP.
Sainz was given a three-place drop for holding up Racing point's Sergio Perez through turns two and three in the one-hour session, Formula 1 added.
Spanish driver Sainz will start in 15th place at Intercity Istanbul Park on Sunday.
On Saturday, Racing Point team's Lance Stroll claimed his maiden Formula 1 pole position with 1'47''765 at Intercity Istanbul Park.
