NAIROBI, Kenya (AA) – The death toll from floods caused by heavy rains in Kenya’s coastal region has risen to nine, police said on Tuesday.
At least two people were killed by mudslides, while another was swept away by raging floods in port city of Mombasa, top police official Peter Omanwa told local media.
A ferry carrying hundreds of Kenyans at the Likoni Channel was washed away to deep sea leaving hundreds in precarious situation.
Kenya’s ports authority officials were forced to suspend normal operations along Likoni and Mtongwe channels following the disruption caused by the heavy rains, leaving thousands of commuters stranded.
On Monday, at least six people including a woman and her four children were crushed to death after a hospital wall collapsed due to heavy rains in Mombasa.
