Guest nations Japan and Qatar to compete in Copa America to make up a 12-nation tournament

ISTANBUL (AA) - The 2019 Copa America draw was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Thursday.

Guest nations Japan and Qatar were invited for the 2019 Copa America to make up a 12-nation tournament.

No teams were invited from North America while Japan and Qatar will also participate in the 2019 Copa America in Brazil.

World Cup 2022 hosts Qatar will face Argentina, Colombia and Paraguay in the 2019 Copa America while Japan will play against Uruguay, Ecuador and Chile.

Japan had played in the Copa America in 1999 while Qatar will make its debut before hosting the 2022 World Cup.

Several countries have had special invitations in Copa America since 1993 as these two countries have been invited for Copa America 2019 in Brazil.

The guests were usually coming from the neighboring North and Central America and the Caribbean confederation.

The South American football association has 10 members.

The 2019 Copa America in Brazil will be played from June 14 to July 7.

The top two nations from each group and the two best third-placed nations will qualify for the quarterfinals.


The groups are as follows:

Group A: Brazil, Bolivia, Venezuela, Peru

Group B: Argentina, Colombia, Paraguay, Qatar

Group C: Uruguay, Ecuador, Japan, Chile
