ANKARA (AA) - Los Angeles FC's Mexican striker Carlos Vela set the record in the Major League Soccer (MLS) -- top-tier football league in the U.S. -- for most goals scored in a single season.
The 30-year-old striker hit a hat-trick in Los Angeles FC's 3-1 beat over Colorado Rapids at the Banc of California Stadium on Sunday, scoring 34 goals in the season to break the record.
The record for most goals scored in a season previously belonged to Venezuelan Josef Martinez of Atlanta United who produced 31 goals last season.
Having scored 34 goals in 31 matches, Vela's outstanding performance played an important role in the success of his team during the regular season.
Los Angeles FC sit at the top of the Western Conference at the end of the regular season, with 16 points ahead of Seattle Sounders.
