ISTANBUL (AA) - Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths has checked into rehab due to "ongoing issues" and will be away from the game for an unspecified time, the team manager has announced
“Leigh will be taken out of football now for a little period of time,” said Brendan Rodgers, speaking ahead of Celtic facing Salzburg in the Europa League Group B on Thursday.
Rodgers gave no further details on the Scottish player's issues, only saying they had been going on "for a number of months" and that it was more than the injuries he has recently faced.
“We want to help him,” added Rodgers, “and we will let you know another time when he is back,” suggesting a return but giving no time frame.
"He's a great guy but football and life is tough for him right now," said Rodgers.
He added: "The most important thing for managers and coaches is the welfare of players. He has all of our support: the team, the staff, and the supporters."
