ISTANBUL (AA) - Former Bolivian President Evo Morales claimed on Sunday to have escaped an assassination attempt early in the morning when unidentified armed assailants opened fire on his vehicle.

Morales posted a video on social media that appeared to show bullet holes in his car as well as a wounded driver.

He claimed four masked people dressed in black and carrying guns emerged from two vehicles and began shooting early in the morning.

He claimed that the incident happened while he was on his way to host his regular Sunday program.

The alleged attack comes amid escalating political tensions in Bolivia, where Morales, who led the country from 2006 to 2019, has been rallying supporters after being barred from future elections by a constitutional court ruling.

Bolivian authorities have not immediately commented on the incident.
