ISTANBUL (AA) - Former England midfielder Ron Flowers, who was a member of the 1966 World Cup's winning squad, passed away at the age of 87 on Friday.
"We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of club legend and vice president Ron Flowers MBE at the age of 87," Wolverhampton said in a statement. Flowers had made 515 appearances for Wolverhampton Wanderers over 15 years in the club.
"A giant on the pitch and a gentleman off it. There will be many people remembering Ron today and all of our thoughts are with those who knew and loved him," it added.
The English national team shared a message of condolence over the death of Flowers on its official website, saying: "We're saddened to hear of the passing of Ron Flowers MBE at the age of 87."
Flowers was capped 49 times by the English national football team from 1958 to 1963. The midfielder made an appearance at the 1962 World Cup in Chile and was a squad member during the 1966 triumph in England.
He was a three-time English champion and won an FA Cup while in Wolverhampton.
