ANKARA (AA) – Former UK Labour leader welcomed Friday the International Court of Justice's order for provisional measures to end bloodshed in Gaza.
“Today's verdict from the ICJ is a vital step toward justice for the Palestinian people,” Jeremy Corbyn wrote on X.
He described South Africa's case as "thorough and devastating," and recalled that "Israel's relentless bombardment is a war on the totality of the people of Gaza."
ICJ confirmed Israel's actions of destruction and displacement, and "found that this amounts to a plausible risk of Israel committing genocide, and ordered Israel to take all measures within its power to prevent genocide," Corbyn added.
The lawmaker thanked South Africa for speaking up and putting "the entire international community on trial, exposing the cowardice and complicity of our political leaders who have so shamefully failed the Palestinian people."
He criticized the political leaders for failing to demand an "immediate cease-fire in Gaza," and he deplored an "annihilation of a people, a culture, and a history."
"We must not stop calling for a ceasefire, and for the only path to a just and lasting peace: an end to the occupation of Palestine," Corbyn stressed.
Giving its interim decision in the genocide case at The Hague on Friday, the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to take "all measures within its power" to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza but fell short of ordering a cease-fire.
The court also ordered Israel to take immediate and effective measures to enable the provision of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance in the Gaza Strip.
