ANKARA (AA) - Fabio Cannavaro, who led Italy to victory in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, will coach Italian second-tier Serie B club Benevento after working in the Middle East and China, the team said in a statement Wednesday.
Cannavaro, 49, was one of the famed defenders while he was playing the game.
He was the Italian national team captain when his nation won the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
Cannavaro, who played for Napoli, Parma, Inter Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid, managed several clubs in Saudi Arabia and China.
This will be Cannavaro's first managerial job in Europe.
This season, Benevento have seven points to be in 13th spot in the Serie B standings.
The club was relegated from the Serie A in 2021.
