French broadcaster 'regrets' interview comparing Israeli army to Hamas

'Journalistic rules, applicable to all interviews, were not followed,' says TV5Monde about asking Israeli officer if Al-Shifa hospital raid respected international, humanitarian law

ANKARA (AA) – A top French TV channel on Monday expressed regret over an interview where one of its journalists implied Israeli army tactics are like those of Palestinian group Hamas, a group the European Union has labeled a terrorist organization.

Last week, journalist Mohamed Kaci was doing a live interview with Col. Olivier Rafowicz about Israel's "military operation in the Gaza Strip and particularly at Al-Shifa Hospital," said a statement by TV5Monde, referring to a raid that drew widespread condemnation for targeting a medical facility, against the rules of war.

"Journalistic rules, applicable to all interviews, were not followed," the statement said, and added: "This led to giving the impression, in the last question, that the Israeli army's intervention modalities were the same as Hamas' strategy, an organization considered terrorist by several states."

Saying the interview ended "abruptly,” TV5Monde said its management “regrets" this.

In the interview, Kaci asked Rafowicz whether launching such an operation at a hospital respects international and humanitarian law.

Rafowicz replied by suggesting Hamas used the hospital “as a military base," an assertion Israel has made repeatedly but failed to provide any evidence of.

He then accused Hamas of massacring children, attacking women, burning people alive, and not respecting international law.

"So you behave like Hamas, is this what you say this evening?" asked Kaci, and cut off the interview after Rafowicz's call for "respect."
