PARIS (AA) - French riot police on Tuesday evicted nearly 400 migrants from a makeshift camp at Grande-Synthe in the north of the country.

The Puythouck camp at Grande-Synthe has been home to hundreds of migrants, including 56 children and 40 women, notably Iraqi Kurds and Afghans, hoping to reach the U.K.

Local officials said the migrants would be taken by bus to reception centers around France.

At least 2,000 people used to live in a camp of 213 closely packed small wooden cabins built by Doctors Without Borders in Grande-Synthe until it was burned and reduced to ashes last April.

The Norrent-Fontes camp in the Pas-de-Calais department in northern France was also dismantled on Monday. Its 85 residents were sent to reception centers elsewhere in the department.
