German local far-right politician injured in attack

BERLIN (AA) - A local politician from the far-right AfD party was injured in a knife attack in Mannheim, media reported on Wednesday.

The 62-year-old was attacked, while he tried to stop several left-wing activists who were trying to torn down AfD’s campaign posters, party officials told German news agency DPA.

The main suspect was arrested by the police while two others ran away, AfD sources have claimed.

However, Mannheim police said in a statement that the suspect apparently had “mental issues” and was taken to a psychiatric hospital after his arrest.

“According to the current state of the investigation, there is no concrete evidence that the suspect realized during the attack that the victim was an AfD politician,” the police said.

The local politician’s injuries were not life-threatening, and he was being treated at a hospital, according to the authorities.
