BERLIN (AA) – A German-Russian dual national has been charged with terrorism for fighting alongside pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, federal prosecutors announced Thursday.

The suspect, identified only as Dieter S. in line with German privacy laws, is accused of being a member of a foreign terrorist organization, specifically the armed unit of the self-proclaimed "Donetsk People's Republic" (VRD).

According to the indictment, Dieter S. fought as an armed member of the VRD against Ukrainian military forces between 2014 and 2016. He allegedly participated in conflicts at Donetsk airport in the winter of 2015 and the town of Marinka later that same year.

German authorities classify the VRD as a terrorist organization, citing its use of violence against civilians and attempts to secede from Ukraine.

The case takes on added significance as prosecutors are also investigating Dieter S. and another German-Russian national, identified as Alexander J., for potential espionage activities on behalf of Russia.

These investigations include alleged plans for sabotage attacks on military infrastructure and industrial sites in Germany.

Both suspects were arrested in Bayreuth in April. During searches of their homes and workplaces, authorities reportedly seized drones, mobile phones, and cameras.

Der Spiegel weekly reported that the Federal Prosecutor's Office aims to conclude the espionage investigation soon, which could lead to additional charges against the suspects.
