ATHENS (AA) – German soccer fans clashed with police in Italy’s southern city of Napoli, local media reported on Wednesday.
Around 200 Union Berlin fans who came to the city to support their team in their match against Napoli on Wednesday threw stones at police and national gendarmerie Carabinieri who tried to disperse them, the TG24 broadcaster reported.
Though they did not encounter Napoli fans, they did damage many shops in the central Piazza Dante and Via Roma, the report said, adding that 11 fans were arrested.
Local police forces are on high alert, fearing that more clashes can erupt as more German fans arrive later in the day, according to the broadcaster.
