BERLIN (AA) — Germany on Tuesday recalled its ambassador to Tehran and summoned the Iranian chargé d'affaires in Berlin following the execution of German-Iranian dissident Jamshid Sharmahd.
“We have expressed our strong protest against the actions of the Iranian regime and reserve the right to take further action,” the German Foreign Ministry said in a statement posted on social media.
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock recalled German ambassador Markus Potzel to Berlin for consultations, after he conveyed Germany’s strong protest to the Iranian Foreign Ministry officials, according to the statement.
Sharmahd, a 69-year-old German-Iranian national, was executed in Iran on charges of plotting terror attacks, which he vehemently denied.
He was accused of leading a US-based group known as “Tondar,” which seeks to restore Iran's monarchy, which was overthrown by the 1979 Islamic revolution. Iranian authorities had claimed that the group planned numerous terror acts against Iran under the orders of Western and American intelligence agencies.
