Germany says not 'intimidated' by revised Russian nuclear doctrine

Putin is playing on fear, and this has become clear again and again since the start of Ukraine war, argues Foreign Minister Baerbock

BERLIN (AA) - Germany does not feel intimidated by Russia's updated nuclear doctrine signed by President Vladimir Putin, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Tuesday as Ukraine marked 1,000 of its war with Moscow.

Putin is playing on fear, and this has become clear again and again since the start of the Ukraine war, Baerbock said after a meeting of European foreign ministers in Warsaw, German press agency dpa reported. “We won’t allow ourselves to be intimidated, no matter what new things are being trumpeted,” she added.

The new doctrine says Russia could consider using nuclear weapons if it was subject to a conventional missile attack on it supported by a nuclear power.

The change comes after President Joe Biden allowed Ukraine to use US long-range missiles to strike deep into Russia.

In a post on X, the Baerbock said: "1000 days of war against Ukraine. 1000 days of tragedy, pain, and tears, also for mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters. But also 1000 days of courage and unity. We stand by your side until you reclaim #peace. Slava Ukraini!"
