Germany says ‘will do everything possible’ to end Russia’s war on Ukraine

Government promises more support to Ukraine, underlines importance of NATO for European security

BERLIN (AA) - Germany will continue to do everything possible to end Russia’s war on Ukraine, the government said on Monday.

In a statement released after Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s meeting with his Estonian counterpart Kaja Kallas, the German government pledged more support to Ukraine.

“It is now important to continue to do everything possible to end the Russian war of aggression and further expand support for Ukraine,” the statement said, but did not provide any concrete details.

Government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said during the meeting Chancellor Scholz underlined the importance of NATO for European security.

“As a reliable ally, Germany takes the concerns of Estonia and all allies very seriously,” he said, without elaborating further.

Germany has been under growing pressure from its allies in recent weeks to supply heavy weapons to Ukraine, including tanks, artillery, and air defense systems.

The government earlier approved sending defensive weapons and other military equipment, but has been reluctant so far to dispatch heavy battlefield weapons, fearing from a direct military confrontation with Russia.

Meanwhile, Estonia's Kallas said on Twitter that she had “good” and “open” discussion with Scholz during her visit to Berlin.

“We need more troops and enablers in our region. Germany’s support in strengthening NATO's eastern flank is essential,” she said.

Kallas also called for increased pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to force him withdraw his troops from Ukraine. “The Kremlin must be and feel isolated. No return to business as usual,” she stressed.
