ACCRA, Ghana (AA) - Ghana's president on Wednesday announced a major reshuffle of his government, including a change at the key finance minister post.
Mohammed Amin Adam, who currently serves as minister of state for finance, will replace Ken Ofori-Atta in the finance minister’s seat.
The move comes less than a year before the end of President Nana Akufo-Addo's second and final term in office and amid mounting pressure for him to remove Ofori-Atta due to the country's current economic challenges. The International Monetary Fund has stepped in to provide a $3 billion bailout.
Other notable changes in the reshuffle include the removal of Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang Manu, Interior Minister Ambrose Dery, Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Kwaku Afriyie, and Roads and Highways Minister Kwasi Amoako-Atta.
Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has been moved to the Housing Ministry, with his deputy Fatimatu Abubakar taking over the post.
Thirteen ministers in the West African country have been affected by the reshuffle, including 10 Cabinet ministers and two regional ministers.
The new appointees must still undergo parliamentary vetting before assuming their roles.
This significant shake-up of the government comes as Ghana faces economic difficulties, with inflation and debt levels rising.
The IMF assistance is aimed at helping the country address these issues and restore macroeconomic stability.
