ATHENS (AA) – The Greek Communist Party (KKE) reiterated on Wednesday its opposition to the government’s decision to send a warship to the Red Sea, where Yemen's Houthis have attacked vessels linked to Israel.
The question submitted to Defense Minister Nikos Dendias by the party’s parliamentary group said the government’s move to send frigate Hydra to Red Sea adds to the previous decisions of involvement in the war in Ukraine and supporting Israel against Palestinians, according to the party’s 902.gr news outlet.
“This involvement puts our country deeper into the vortex of war, turns the Greek people into the aggressors of other peoples and at the same time the target of retaliation,” it said.
“The minister is asked how the government positions itself in the face of popular demand to cancel the decision to send a frigate of the Greek Navy to the war in the Red Sea and to disengage the country from the Euro-Atlantic plans."
The Houthis have been targeting cargo ships in the Red Sea owned or operated by Israeli companies or transporting goods to and from Israel in solidarity with the Gaza Strip, which has been under an Israeli onslaught since Oct. 7.
With tensions escalating due to the US and UK carrying out retaliatory airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, the group said it also considered all American and British ships to be legitimate military targets.
