ATHENS (AA) – A Greek police officer who was injured by a flare in an incident of hooligan violence earlier this month died in hospital, local media reported on Wednesday.
Judicial authorities will be notified of the 31-year-old officer’s death so that the charges against an 18-year-man who has been detained for allegedly injuring the officer during hooligan violence on Dec. 7 can be adjusted accordingly, the state-run AMNA news agency reported.
An investigation is already underway to identify additional people who may have been involved in the incident, the news agency said.
During the clashes outside the Melina Mercouri sports complex in the port city of Piraeus' Rentis area, the officer was hit in the thigh by a flare fired by someone in the crowd, and he has been fighting for his life in the hospital since.
