ATHENS (AA) – A prosecutor in Greece ordered a probe into the death of a 7-year-old from Strep-A bacteria in a children’s hospital in the northern port city of Thessaloniki, local media reported on Tuesday.

The prosecutor will investigate whether there was an offense of manslaughter or negligence leading to the child’s death, public broadcaster ERT reported.

The minor, who passed away on Monday, became the sixth victim of Strep-A this year, ERT said, adding that the victim’s 9-year-old cousin was also hospitalized due to the same bacteria.

Strep-A, short for Streptococcus A, is a bacteria commonly found on the skin or in the throat.

It can cause a wide variety of skin, soft tissue, and respiratory tract infections ranging in severity from mild to life-threatening.
