BEIRUT (AA) – The armed wing of Hamas in Lebanon on Monday said it fired a barrage of rockets towards Israeli targets.

In a statement, "Al-Qassam Brigades - Lebanon" said it struck the Israeli settlement of Nahariya and the northern Haifa city with 16 rockets.

It added that the firing of the rockets came "in response to the (Israeli) occupation massacres and aggression on our people in Gaza."

The Times of Israel news website said rocket sirens were activated in Israel's northern areas in Nahariya, Acre and Karyot, but no injuries were reported.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese Hezbollah group also said its fighters hit several Israeli military locations, including the Al-Raheb military site near the border with Lebanon, and managed to destroy the site's technical equipment.

Lebanon's official National News Agency said the Israeli artillery struck several areas in southern Lebanon, including the towns of Marwahin, Blida, Mays el-Jabal, and Muhaybib.

Tension has flared along the border between Israel and Lebanon amid intermittent exchange of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah since Oct. 7 following the eruption of fighting in Gaza.

The clashes are the deadliest since the two sides – Hezbollah and Israeli army – fought a full-scale war in 2006.

Israel has launched air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip following a cross-border attack by the Palestinian group Hamas on Oct. 7.

At least 10,022 Palestinians, including 4,104 children and 2,641 women, have been killed in the Israeli bombardments in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli death toll is nearly 1,600, according to official figures.
