Attack comes in response to Israeli airstrikes on Baalbeck city, says group

BEIRUT (AA) - Lebanon’s Hezbollah group on Tuesday said it hit the Israeli army's Meron airbase in northern Israel in response to Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon.

In a statement, the group said it attacked the Meron Israeli air control base in the Jabal Jarmaq area early this morning with a barrage of missiles from several launchers in Lebanon.

The group said the attack comes in response to the Israeli airstrike on the city of Baalbeck on Monday.

The Israeli army, for its part, said dozens of rockets have been fired from Lebanon at the northern Upper Galilee area, activating sirens in the area.

On Monday, Hezbollah said it shot down an Israeli Hermes 450 aerial vehicle with a surface-to-air missile over the Tuffah region of southern Lebanon.

Tension has flared along the border between Lebanon and Israel amid intermittent exchange of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, in the deadliest clashes since the two sides fought a full-scale war in 2006.

The border tension comes amid an Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip following a cross-border attack by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023.
