BELGRADE, Serbia (AA) - Hungary summoned Germany's ambassador in Budapest on Thursday to protest her remarks, in which she urged Hungarians to safeguard their government relations with the EU and NATO.
"In yesterday's speech, the German ambassador in Budapest seriously intervened in Hungary's internal affairs, violating the country's sovereignty. Respect is expected of ambassadors serving in our country in any case, so the ambassador's speech is completely unacceptable," Hungary's Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Facebook.
He added that the ambassador was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the afternoon.
Late on Wednesday, Germany's Ambassador Julia Gross spoke out against actions she claimed are undermining Hungary's trust in NATO and the EU.
"Hungary is on a path that is leading it away from its friends," Gross said at an event commemorating German Unity Day.
Gross also criticized the government for "antics surrounding Finland's and Sweden's NATO accession."
