BELGRADE, Serbia (AA) - Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party on Tuesday proposed holding a vote next Monday on the ratification of Sweden’s bid to join NATO.
After submitting the motion, Mate Kocsis, the chairman of the party’s parliamentary group, said that they would support the vote.
For Sweden to join NATO, the approval of 31 member states is required.
Hungary remains the only NATO ally that has yet to approve Sweden's membership in the alliance after the Turkish parliament ratified the Nordic country's application on Jan. 23.
Sweden and Finland applied for NATO membership in May 2022 following the start of Russia's war on Ukraine earlier that year.
Finland joined the alliance as its 31st member in April 2023.
